Roux winner of 2016 Exxaro Arnot Coal Innovation Award

Dr Johann RouxDr Johann Roux, Managing Director of the Institute of Transdisciplinary Development (ITD) in Centurion, received the 2016 Exxaro Arnot Coal Innovation Award in February. As a consultant Roux is the first non-employee of the company to receive this kind of recognition.

Roux facilitated a Relationship by Objectives (RBO) process at Arnot Coal on 11 and 12 February last year (2015). Both management and organised labour were part of the process. Management identified this process as it was strategically aligned with the relationship building between the two parties.

Prior to ITD’s involvement Arnot Coal experienced relational problems between management and organised labour, resulting in a negative culture, resulting in production performance and bonus targets not being met. The BU Manager approved to have a RBO process done and both management and organised labour attended a session over two days. A number of milestones were reached and as a result production performance started to pick up and employees qualified for bonus for the first time in six years.

Absenteeism declined and there was a positive climate at the mine. The positive relationship between management and organised labour carried the mine among others through a wage negotiation strike.

The remarkable aspect is that there has been a continual support from both sides during these challenging times.

Influence and continual check-ins yielded benefits, which when compared to previous years, had positive, sustainable and satisfactory results for the mine and Exxaro in general.

The group ER Manager requested Arnot to share the successes with other ER Managers, Exxaro-wide.
